At Least 22 Killed as Crane Collapse Derails Train Near Bangkok
Thailand Train Tragedy: Crane Collapses, 22 Dead, 30 Plus Injured: At least 22 people were killed and more than 30 others injured after a passenger train derailed in central Thailand on Wednesday morning when a construction crane fell onto one of the carriages, authorities said.
The train, which was traveling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province in northeastern Thailand, derailed in the Sikhio district of Nakhon Ratchasima province, approximately 230 kilometers (143 miles) northeast of the capital.
According to the AFP news agency, the accident occurred when a crane being used for a high-speed rail construction project collapsed and struck the passing train. The impact caused several carriages to derail, with one briefly catching fire.
“Twenty-two people were killed and more than 30 injured,” said Thachapon Chinnawong, the local police chief in Nakhon Ratchasima province. Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene, and rescue teams worked to evacuate passengers and assist the injured.
Police confirmed that the fire had been extinguished and that rescue and recovery operations were ongoing. The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, while authorities secured the area to prevent further danger.
Local media reported that the crane was part of ongoing infrastructure development aimed at expanding Thailand’s high-speed rail network. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the crane’s collapse and to assess whether safety protocols were properly followed.
The incident marks one of the deadliest rail accidents in Thailand in recent years and has raised renewed concerns about construction safety near active transportation routes.
