US Again Alleges India’s Satellite Policy, Internet Shutdowns Blocking Trade Deal: The United States has raised fresh concerns over India’s satellite policies and frequent internet shutdowns, calling them obstacles to a potential trade agreement. In its 2026 National Trade Estimate Report, released by the Office of the United States Trade Representative, Washington highlighted restrictions such as the preference for domestic satellite services and limitations on foreign firms in India’s digital and telecom sectors.
According to the report, India’s internet shutdowns are impacting access to information, disrupting services, and hindering the growth of a free and open digital economy. The US also expressed concern over increased requests to remove content from American companies, some of which it described as “politically motivated,” raising questions about transparency and digital trade practices.
The report further criticized India’s satellite rules, which require DTH operators to rely on domestic providers like Indian Space Research Organisation and its commercial arm Antrix Corporation. Additionally, new telecom security guidelines mandating local data routing and infrastructure sourcing could create further challenges for foreign companies. The US has urged India to adopt more open and competitive policies to ease trade tensions and support future agreements.
