3-day bird census begins in Bhitarkanika National Park: A three-day census of native bird species began across Bhitarkanika National Park and Sanctuary on Thursday. Four teams have been deployed to carry out the counting exercise.
The monsoon bird census was launched by the Rajnagar Forest Division in Kendrapada district. As per reports, the three-day cenus will be conducted at Mathadia, Durgaprasad Dia and Lakshmi Prasad Dia areas of the park. Four teams of the Forest Department have been deployed for the exercise, with each team comprising four to five forest personnel. The census is being carried out under the leadership of ornithologists. The forest department personnel were given training for the census. The counting will be conducted from 6 am to 12 pm every day.
Around 10 species of birds, including Gendalia (Asian Openbill), Dabentia, Anjana, Khaira, Panikua (Little Cormorant), Majhia Baga, Chhota Baga, Rani Baga, Kapar Khai and Andharia Baga will be counted during the drive, said sources. The collected data will provide details about the number and species of birds across the designated areas of Bhitarkanika.
