Private two-wheeler owners allowed to operate bike taxis: Nitin Gadkari: The central government has taken a big step in the direction of creating new employment opportunities and facilitating transportation in the country. Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said that private two-wheeler owners may be allowed to run bike taxis. He has urged the state governments to approve such services in their respective states.
According to Gadkari, transport is a state matter, so the decision to implement bike taxis will have to be taken by the states. He said that this can create a new source of income for people especially in rural areas. Some states are not yet allowing such services. He appealed to the state governments to move forward in this direction.
Gadkari claimed that the promotion of bike taxi services could create livelihood opportunities for around 8 crore people. This is beneficial in sectors where employment options are limited. He said that the government is preparing to amend the Motor Vehicles Act. Under this, a negative point system can be introduced for drivers who repeatedly violate traffic rules. A driving license can be suspended or revoked after accumulating a certain number of points.
Gadkari also launched a pilot program called ‘Suraksha’. Under this, free medical check-up and counseling will be provided to drivers, construction workers and workers at risk associated with highway and mining projects. Initially, the program will be implemented within a radius of about 150 km in the Nagpur-Kamthi NH-44 section and the mining area of Chandrapur in Maharashtra and aims to reach 10,000 people.
