5 new judges appointed to SC, strength rises to 38: Five new judges were appointed to the Supreme Court on Monday. The central government cleared the appointments of four high court chief justices and senior advocate V. Mohana as judges of the Supreme Court after the apex court collegium recommended their elevation. After this appointment, the strength of the SC judges has risen to 38.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal announced the appointments of senior SC advocate Venkita Subramani Mohana, Justice Shree Chandrasekhar(Chief Justice of Bombay High Court), Justice Sheel Nagu(Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court), Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva(Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court) and Justice Arun Palli(Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court) have been elevated as top court judges under article 124(2) of the constitution.
The centre has notified the appointment after the SC Collegium, headed by the Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, recommended their elevation on May 27.
The expansion is aimed at addressing the growing pendency of cases in the apex court and enabling the constitution of more regular constitutional benches. The latest appointments are expected to strengthen the court’s capacity while reflecting considerations of seniority, merit, regional representation and gender diversity.
