German Chancellor Friedrich Merz Arrives in India, Key Talks with PM Modi on Submarine Deal and Strategic Ties
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz Arrives in India, Talks with PM Modi: India–Germany relations are set to receive a major boost as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Monday for a two-day visit to India. During his visit, Merz is scheduled to hold high-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focusing on strengthening bilateral cooperation across key sectors.
This is Friedrich Merz’s first visit to Asia since becoming German Chancellor, making it a diplomatically significant trip. The discussions are expected to cover trade, investment, defence cooperation, cutting-edge technology, and global political developments.
A major focus of the visit is the proposed ₹52,500 crore submarine deal for the Indian Navy. Under this proposal, India plans to acquire six advanced submarines, potentially through a partnership between Germany’s ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems and India’s Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited. If finalized, the deal would significantly enhance India’s naval strength and maritime security.
Why the Submarine Deal Is Important
The submarine agreement is considered crucial for India’s defence preparedness. It is expected to:
- Strengthen the Indian Navy’s combat capabilities
- Boost indigenous defence production
- Provide access to advanced German submarine technology
- Strengthen the Make in India initiative in defence
- Enhance India’s strategic position in the Indian Ocean region
Apart from bilateral matters, PM Modi and Chancellor Merz are also expected to discuss global issues, including the Ukraine crisis, the global security situation, and rising international tensions. The talks come at a time of political and military instability in several parts of the world, making strategic cooperation between India and Germany increasingly important.
During his stay in Ahmedabad, Chancellor Merz will also visit the Sabarmati Ashram, take part in the International Kite Festival, and attend a skills development program. These engagements highlight the cultural and social dimensions of India–Germany relations, beyond politics and defence.
Overall, the visit signals a strong commitment from both nations to deepen their strategic partnership, expand defence cooperation, and strengthen economic and technological ties in an evolving global landscape.
