Global Weakness Hits India; Sensex, Nifty Close Sharply Down

Reliance, TCS, Infosys Drag Markets Down in Friday Rout

Global Weakness Hits India; Sensex, Nifty Close Sharply Down: On the last trading day of the week, Indian stock markets witnessed a sharp sell-off, leaving investors anxious as portfolios turned deep red. The decline that began in US markets spilled over into India, wiping out nearly ₹7 lakh crore from the Bombay Stock Exchange’s market capitalization in a single session.

Sensex and Nifty Close Deep in Red

By the closing bell, the BSE Sensex plunged 1,048 points to settle at 82,626, while the NIFTY 50 dropped 336 points to close at 25,471.

Out of the 30 Sensex stocks, 28 ended in losses. Only State Bank of India and Bajaj Finance managed to stay in positive territory.

Why Did the Market Fall?

Market experts attribute the sharp fall to growing uncertainty around artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on traditional IT business models. Investors are worried that rapid AI adoption could disrupt revenue streams of established tech companies.

Heavyweights like Reliance Industries, Tata Consultancy Services, and Infosys were among the biggest drags on the indices.

Massive Wealth Erosion

The total market value fell from ₹472.48 lakh crore on Thursday to ₹465.31 lakh crore on Friday — a massive one-day erosion. Meanwhile, US markets have reportedly lost nearly ₹90 lakh crore over the past three days, intensifying global investor fears.

Other major stocks such as Tata Steel, Titan Company, and Hindustan Unilever declined by up to 5%.

Sector-Wide Selling

While the IT sector initially led the decline, the sell-off soon spread to metals, real estate, energy, consumer goods, and banking stocks. The widespread selling pressure resulted in significant losses for both retail and institutional investors.

Analysts believe the coming weeks will be crucial as markets assess global cues, corporate earnings, and the long-term impact of AI-led disruption on traditional sectors.
