NHAI Launches ‘Bee Corridors’ Along National Highways to Boost Environment and Agriculture: India’s highways are set for a green transformation. In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced the creation of dedicated “Bee Corridors” along national highways to support honeybees and other pollinators.
Unlike traditional roadside plantations focused mainly on beautification, this new project aims to plant trees and flowering species that bloom throughout different seasons of the year. The goal is simple but powerful — ensure bees have access to nectar and pollen all year round.
Why Bee Corridors Matter
Honeybees play a critical role in agriculture, helping pollinate crops that produce fruits, vegetables, and seeds. Experts say strengthening bee populations can directly improve agricultural productivity and ecological balance.
Under the plan, native trees such as neem, karanja, mahua, palash, bottlebrush, jamun, and siris will be planted. In addition, shrubs, herbs, and grasses will also be cultivated to create layered green habitats. Importantly, dead wood and hollow tree trunks will be preserved to provide natural nesting spaces for pollinators.
Green Clusters Every 500 Metres
NHAI field offices across the country will identify suitable highway stretches to develop green clusters at intervals of 500 metres to 1 kilometre — aligning with the average foraging range of bees.
In the financial year 2026–27, NHAI plans to plant around 4 million trees, with nearly 60 percent designated under the Bee Corridor initiative. Each field office has been assigned a target to develop at least three such corridors.
Benefits Beyond Highways
The initiative is expected to increase biodiversity, improve pollination rates, and potentially enhance crop yields. By ensuring year-round flowering cycles, the corridors will maintain greenery across seasons while strengthening the natural ecosystem.
With this move, India’s highways may soon be known not only for speed and connectivity but also for nurturing life and sustainability.
