This information has been given in a statement issued by the government. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced that the Government has decided to immediately revoke the detention of Sonam Wangchuk by invoking powers under the National Security Act. Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk has been in jail since September 26, 2025. The Government is committed to creating an atmosphere of peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh to facilitate constructive and meaningful dialogue with all stakeholders. Towards this objective and after due deliberations, the Government has decided to revoke the detention of Sonam Wangchuk by invoking powers under the National Security Act.
According to the government, Wangchuk was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on the orders of the District Magistrate after the law and order situation in Leh deteriorated on 24 September 2025. He has already served almost half of his detention. The government said the administration is in constant touch with various groups and community leaders in Ladakh to address the concerns and demands of the people. The recent shutdown and protests have disrupted the peaceful atmosphere in the region.
The government said that it is very important to create an atmosphere of peace and mutual trust in Ladakh, which can lead to constructive dialogue with all parties. Therefore, after due deliberations, it has been decided to end Wangchuk’s detention. The government also reiterated that all necessary steps will be taken to ensure the security of Ladakh. The government expressed hope that regional issues will be resolved through dialogue and cooperation.
