April 1, 2026 Brings Major Financial Rule Changes Impacting Taxes, Banking, Travel, and More

April 1, 2026: Big Financial Changes That Impact Your Wallet: April 1 marks the beginning of the new financial year in India, and 2026 comes with a wide range of significant rule changes that will directly affect citizens’ finances, savings, and daily transactions.

From LPG prices and income tax reforms to banking charges and travel rules, several new regulations have come into effect, reshaping how people manage their money.

LPG & Fuel Updates

While domestic LPG cylinder prices remain unchanged, commercial LPG cylinders have become costlier by around ₹200–₹310 across cities. Meanwhile, aviation turbine fuel (ATF) prices have been kept stable, offering relief to airlines.

Income Tax Overhaul

The decades-old Income Tax Act, 1961 has been replaced by the Income Tax Act, 2025. A major change is the introduction of a single “Tax Year” system, eliminating confusion between financial year (FY) and assessment year (AY).
Additionally, stricter monitoring of cash transactions has been introduced, lowering the reporting threshold from ₹20 lakh to ₹10 lakh annually.

Salary & Labour Code Changes

New labour codes are expected to impact salary structures, mandating that at least 50% of total compensation be basic pay. This will increase PF and gratuity contributions but may reduce take-home salary.

Travel & FASTag Rules

Under new railway rules, ticket cancellation penalties have increased:

  • 50% refund if cancelled 8–24 hours before departure
  • No refund if cancelled within 8 hours

At the same time, National Highways Authority of India has raised FASTag annual pass fees slightly.

Banking & ATM Charges

Banks including HDFC Bank, Bandhan Bank, and Punjab National Bank have revised ATM charges. Customers will now pay ₹23 per withdrawal after free monthly limits, and failed transactions due to low balance may attract penalties.

PAN, Credit Score & Documentation

Aadhaar alone will no longer be valid as proof of date of birth for PAN applications. Other documents like birth certificates or Class 10 certificates will be required. Credit scores will also be updated weekly for greater accuracy.

Digital Payments & UPI

The Reserve Bank of India has introduced stricter security measures, mandating two-factor authentication for UPI and digital payments. UPI-based ATM withdrawals will now attract a ₹23 fee per transaction.

Cash Payments & Investments

Cash payments at hotels are now capped at ₹1 lakh. On the investment front, tax rules for Sovereign Gold Bonds have changed, with certain investors now liable to pay 12.5% long-term capital gains tax.

Credit Card Rule Changes

Banks like Axis Bank and YES Bank have revised reward structures, cashback benefits, and transaction charges, impacting users’ spending patterns.

Loans & Investments

Under new RBI guidelines, loans can now be taken against silver assets, including jewellery and coins, expanding borrowing options.

Overall, these sweeping changes will significantly influence spending, saving, investing, and financial planning for individuals across the country.
