Narendra Modi Touches Feet of Veteran BJP Worker During Suvendu Adhikari Oath Ceremony: An emotional moment during the swearing-in ceremony of the BJP government in West Bengal became one of the most talked-about highlights of the event. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived on stage at the historic Brigade Parade Ground alongside Chief Minister-designate Suvendu Adhikari, he paused to greet 98-year-old veteran BJP worker Makhanlal Sarkar. Modi embraced him warmly and later touched his feet as a mark of respect, drawing loud applause from the audience.

Makhanlal Sarkar is regarded as one of the oldest and most dedicated grassroots workers associated with the BJP in Bengal. His political journey began shortly after India’s independence. In 1952, he joined the movement led by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee to hoist the national flag in Kashmir, a movement that later became a landmark moment in nationalist politics. Reports suggest Sarkar was also arrested during the campaign, strengthening his long-standing association with nationalist ideology and political activism.

Following the formation of the BJP in 1980, Makhanlal Sarkar played an important role in expanding the party’s organizational network across North Bengal. He worked as an organizational coordinator in districts including West Dinajpur, Jalpaiguri, and Darjeeling at a time when the BJP had limited political influence in the state. Within a year, he reportedly helped enroll nearly 10,000 new members into the party. Beginning in 1981, he served as district president for seven consecutive years, an unusually long tenure that reflected both his influence within the organization and his strong grassroots connection in the region.
