Five New Judges Inducted; Supreme Court Strength Hits Historic High of 37
Supreme Court of India Swells to Record 37 Judges After Appointment of Five New Justices: The Supreme Court has five new judges, taking its total strength to 37, the highest in its history. Earlier, the maximum sanctioned strength was 34, but it has now been raised to 38.
Chief Justice Surya Kant administered the oath at a ceremony held at 10:30 AM in the Supreme Court auditorium.
The new judges are:
Justice Sheel Nagu (Punjab & Haryana High Court Chief Justice)
Justice Shri Chandrashekhar (Bombay High Court Chief Justice)
Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva (Madhya Pradesh High Court Chief Justice)
Justice Arun Palli (J&K and Ladakh High Court Chief Justice)
Venkitaramani Mohana (Senior Advocate, Supreme Court)
With this, the number of women judges in the Supreme Court has increased from one to two. Justice Mohana also becomes only the second woman to be directly elevated from the Bar to the Supreme Court bench, after Justice Indu Malhotra.
One seat is still vacant, even after these appointments. Two more judges, Justice J.K. Maheshwari and Justice Pankaj Mithal, are set to retire soon, which will create three vacancies in total. The Collegium is expected to soon recommend new names to fill them.
