Veteran tamil director K. Bhagyaraj passes away, CM announces full state honours: Tamil cinema’s well-known filmmaker, actor, and screenwriter K. Bhagyaraj died of a heart attack in Chennai on Saturday. He was 73 years old. His demise has marked the end of an era in Tamil cinema.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, in a ‘X’ post expressed deep sorrow over the passing of legendary filmmaker and actor K.Bhagyaraj. ‘Through films that reflect unique storytelling, humour-infused performances, and the profound emotions of rural life and family relationships, Thiru. K. Bhagyaraj has carved an everlasting place in the hearts of Tamil people. His contributions to the Tamil film world are immeasurable,’ he said. Chief Minister also announced full state honours for the iconic director as a mark of respect to the late filmmaker.
K Bhagyaraj was widely appreciated for his contribution to excellent storytelling, screenplay writing and entertaining films for middle-class families. K. Bhagyaraj acted in more than 75 films and directed more than 20 films throughout his career. He started his acting career as a junior artist. He made his debut in the film ’16 Vayathinile’ (1977).
Then he started working in Tamil cinema as an assistant director. He wrote the scripts of many films. His first film as a director is ‘Suvarilladha Chitthirangal’ (1979). He served as a director for films such as ‘Oru Kai Osai’, ‘Darling, Darling, Darling’, ‘Avasara Police 100’, ‘Siddu 2’ etc. After 2010, K. Bhagyaraj took a break from directing but continued to do supporting roles in films. He also acted in Dhanush’s film ‘Kubera’ (2025).
Talking about Bhagyaraj’s family, he is survived by his wife Poornima Jayaram and two sons Saranya Bhagyaraj and Shantanu Bhagyaraj. Shantun also acts in films like his father.
