India Launches Its First Hydrogen-Powered Passenger Train
PM Modi Flags Off India’s First Hydrogen Passenger Train: Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off India’s first indigenous hydrogen-powered passenger train from Jind, Haryana, on Friday. The train will run on the 89-km Jind–Sonipat route, making India one of the few countries to operate a hydrogen-powered passenger train.
The train runs on hydrogen fuel cell technology, producing electricity without diesel. It emits only water vapour and heat, making it an eco-friendly and zero-emission transport option.
The 10-coach train can carry around 2,600 passengers. It has a 3,200-horsepower engine, a regular speed of 75 km/h, and can reach 110 km/h.
The train is equipped with advanced safety features, including hydrogen leak detectors, flame detectors, and automatic shut-off systems.
Fares are affordable, starting at ₹5 and going up to ₹25. The train will run between Jind and Sonipat on a daily schedule.
Indian Railways plans to use this technology in heritage trains in the future as part of its clean energy and sustainable transport goals.
