Rath Yatra Unites Millions in Celebration
Puri Awakes to Its Biggest Festival: Rath Yatra Draws Global Devotees: Today marks the beginning of the world-famous Holy Rath Yatra, one of the biggest and most sacred festivals dedicated to Lord Jagannath. Every year, the holy city of Puri comes alive with devotion, tradition, and celebration as millions of devotees from across India and around the world gather to witness this grand occasion.
On this special day, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra leave the Ratna Singhasan inside the Jagannath Temple and come out to bless their devotees. It is believed that this is the only time in the year when the deities step out of the temple to meet everyone, regardless of caste, creed, or religion. This unique tradition symbolises the Lord’s love and compassion for all.
The Grand Road (Bada Danda) in Puri is filled with countless devotees eagerly waiting for a glimpse of the divine siblings seated on their magnificent wooden chariots. For many, pulling the sacred chariots is not just a ritual but a once-in-a-lifetime blessing. The atmosphere is filled with the chanting of “Jai Jagannath,” the sound of cymbals and drums, and an overwhelming sense of faith and spiritual joy.
The Shree Jagannath Temple administration has completed all preparations for the festival, and the schedule of the sacred rituals has been finalised. The ceremonial Pahandi Bije, during which the deities are carried from the temple to their respective chariots, is scheduled to begin around 9:00 a.m.
Following this, the traditional Chhera Pahanra ritual will be performed by the Gajapati Maharaja of Puri between 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. During this centuries-old ceremony, the King symbolically sweeps the chariots with a golden broom, reminding everyone that all are equal before the Lord.
After the completion of all the sacred rituals and temple traditions, the most eagerly awaited moment of the festival- the pulling of the three majestic chariots- will begin at around 4:00 p.m. As the giant chariots start moving along the Bada Danda towards the Gundicha Temple, thousands of devotees will join together in pulling the ropes, seeking the blessings of Lord Jagannath and praying for peace, happiness, and prosperity.
