An official order has been issued to open four gates following a steady rise in the water level due to incessant rainfall near the upper catchment areas of the dam. At present, a total of four sluice gates remain open, with three on the left side and one on the right side said chief engineer Pratap Choudhury.

Dam officials said they are closely monitoring the water level and the inflow situation. People residing in the downstream areas of the Mahanadi have been alerted and asked to remain cautious. It may be noted that the dam authorities earlier opened four gates to discharge the season’s first floodwaters on July 9. Then, more gates were opened, taking the numbers to 10 on July 10.
