5.9 magnitude earthquake jolts eastern Japan: A moderate earthquake struck eastern Japan early Sunday. Over 23 people were injured across the region. Officials reported no risk of a Tsunami.
The Japan Meteorological Agency recorded earthquake at a preliminary magnitude of 5.9 on Richter scale. The U.S Geological Survey recorded a magnitude of 5.8. Its epicenter occured in Southern Ibaraki prefecture at a depth of 70 kilometres, an area of Japan prone to frequent earthquakes.
Express trains serving Tokyo and Narita Airport were delayed, along with other local trains in northeastern areas. Meanwhile, Shinkansen bullet trains continued to operate normally. The tremor also triggered emergency earthquake alerts on mobile phones and caused significant shaking across Tokyo. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said on X that the government had established a task force to assess possible damage.
