Sweet prices jump to Rs 700 amid rising sugar cost: The rise in sugar prices has affected the sweets market in Delhi. Pre-orders have decreased due to the rise in prices of sweets and some customers are opting for chocolate gift packs.
According to sweets traders in Delhi, this time there is a decrease of about 10 percent in the pre-orders of Raksha Bandhan. Assuming normal sales to be 100 percent, current turnover is estimated to be around 80 to 85 percent. According to the shopkeepers, there is a demand for cashew barfi, dry sweets and soanpapdi. However, rising prices have forced consumers to revise their shopping budgets.
Traders say that earlier sweets worth Rs 500 now costs Rs 650 to Rs 700. The increased cost is affecting not only the customers but also the profits of the shopkeepers. Many businesses are currently cutting their earnings to avoid raising prices so that sales during the festival are not affected too much.
Among the expensive sweets, some customers are also opting for chocolate gift packs instead of traditional sweets on Raksha Bandhan. According to shopkeepers, gift packs like Cadbury Celebrations, Dairy Milk, Kit-Kat and Ferrero Rocher are gaining popularity among shoppers.
However, despite the increase in prices, shopping in the sweet market is expected to continue during the festival. The prices of sweets will largely depend on the level of sugar prices in the coming days and the sales trend after Raksha bandhan.
