The Punjab Cabinet on Sunday passed a resolution against the Center’s notification to appoint Ashwani Kumar Mishra as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Justice Ashwani Mishra took oath as Chief Justice of Punjab-Haryana HC: Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra took oath as the Chief Justice of the Punjab-Haryana High Court. Governor Gulab Chand Kataria administered the oath of office to justice Mishra in a ceremony at Lok Bhawan in Chandigarh on Monday.
The Punjab Cabinet on Sunday, September 6, passed a resolution against the Center’s notification to appoint Ashwani Kumar Mishra as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The cabinet said that this decision was taken without waiting for the opinion of the state government. It was also alleged that this step was taken in complete disregard of constitutional rules and due process.
Haryana Governor Asim Kumar Ghosh, Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini, Haryana Assembly Speaker Harwinder Kalyan, Shiromani Akali Dal MLA Ganiv Kaur Majithia and Punjab Chief Secretary KAP Sinha were present in the swearing-in ceremony.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann did not attend the swearing-in ceremony. His government had opposed the appointment of Justice Mishra. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had written separate letters to President Draupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging the Centre. He said in the letter that he should not proceed with the process of swearing in Justice Mishra.
Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra was enrolled as an advocate on May 8, 1993. Then in 2013 he became a senior advocate. He was sworn in as an Additional Judge on February 3, 2014 and as a Permanent Judge on February 1, 2016 in Allahabad. Later, he was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in Chandigarh. Here he took charge on July 21, 2025.
