Indonesian ship missing: 103 rescued, 1 died; search operation underway: At least one died and 103 rescued after an Indonesian passenger ship reportedly gone missing after losing contact early Sunday. The search and rescue operation for remaining persons is ongoing.
According to initial information the ship was carrying 240 passengers while travelling from East Java to South Kalimantan on Borneo island. The last location of the ship was in the Java Sea, which was about 148 kilometers away from a pier in Banjarmasin. ‘The operator of the vessel PT Virgo Yoel Rihi reported the incident to the authorities after receiving information that it was encountering bad weather,’ Search and Rescue Office chief I. Putu Sudayana said in a video briefing. Rihi also reported the loss of contact and said the ship departed Surabaya on Saturday at 10:13 am local time.
The Search and Rescue Office in the city of Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan, which is located on Borneo island, said it received a report two hours after contact was lost with the Virgo Transport 8 at about 2 am Sunday. The ship had departed from Surabaya, Indonesia’s second largest city in East Java province, en route to Banjarmasin.
