ECI Denies Reports of Differences Over SIR Process
Election Commission Rejects Claims of Internal Dispute Over SIR: Debate over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has increased in several states. Reports recently claimed that there were differences within the Election Commission of India over the SIR process.
However, ECI sources have denied these reports, saying that all decisions related to the SIR were taken unanimously. According to the Commission, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi agreed on the decisions.
What Did the Report Claim?
A report by The Indian Express claimed that Sandhu and Joshi had raised written objections to several decisions between November 2025 and August 2026. These included issues related to voter registration, deletion of names, electoral data and the SIR process.
The report led to criticism from several opposition parties, which questioned the functioning of the Election Commission and demanded greater accountability.
The ECI, however, maintained that while the commissioners may have different views on some issues, all final decisions are taken with the consent of all three members.
