A big relief for diabetics, Weekly insulin shots launched in India: Now diabetic people will no longer have to take daily Insulin shots. They can now have a single weekly dose. Danish Pharmaceutical giant, a foreign company, has launched such a drug in India, which will be more convenient for Indian diabetics.
Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk has launched a new insulin in India named Awiqli(insulin icodec) on Thursday. The country’s first weekly basal insulin for adult patients with type-1 and type-2 diabetes. More than 10 crore people in India are suffering from diabetes, while 13.6 crore people have pre-diabetes. At present, about 60 lakh people are taking insulin therapy in the country.
With this new therapy, patients will need only 52 injections over the course of a year instead of 365. According to the company, in the global ONWARDS-1 clinical trial, Awiqli showed better results in controlling blood sugar (HbA1c) and maintaining glucose at safe levels for longer than daily insulin glargine-U100. A once- weekly dose of 70 insulin units will cost Rs 261 only.
