The Union cabinet has decided to give Agniveers an option to continue in service for two more years beyond their four-year tenure and apply for absorption into the armed forces at the end of this extended period, chief of defence staff General NS Raja Subramani said in a media briefing on Wednesday.
CDS General Raja Subramani stated that the performance of ‘Agniveers’ has been continuously evaluated over the past four years, and the feedback regarding their performance has been positive. Under the previous system, 25 percent of Agniveers were inducted into the regular army based on merit, while the remaining 75 percent had to leave the service after four years. Now, an additional service period of two years has been added for them.
However, to qualify, candidates must express their interest and meet the prescribed selection criteria. In other words, induction into the regular army after the additional two years is not guaranteed; it will depend on the selection process, Subramani added.
