Akhand Jyoti Goes Off in Navratri: Auspicious or Inauspicious: The sacred festival of Chaitra Navratri is a time of devotion and spiritual discipline. One important ritual during this period is lighting the Akhand Jyoti, which symbolizes continuous faith and devotion to Goddess Durga. It is believed that this अखंड (unbroken) flame brings peace, prosperity, and fulfills wishes.

However, if the Akhand Jyoti accidentally goes out, there is no need to panic. Scriptures emphasize devotion and intent over small mistakes.

What to Do If Akhand Jyoti Goes Out

1. Light a small witness lamp (Sakshi Deep) first.
2. Clean the lamp (diya) properly.
3. Remove and discard the old wick.
4. Use a fresh cotton wick.
5. Relight the Akhand Jyoti using the Sakshi lamp.
6. Pray to Goddess Durga and seek forgiveness.
7. Chant the mantra “Om Dum Durgaye Namah” 108 times.
8. Take a vow to maintain the flame carefully going forward.

Is It a Bad Omen?

• It is often considered inauspicious, but not necessarily true.
• Sometimes the flame may go out due to natural reasons like wind or low oil.

Important Tips While Lighting Akhand Jyoti

• Place the lamp in the southeast direction of your पूजा space.
• Keep it away from wind or fans.
• Use ghee for better auspiciousness (mustard oil can also be used).
• Ensure enough oil/ghee to keep the flame burning continuously.
• Use a clean cotton wick.
• Check the lamp regularly, especially before sleeping.
• Use a glass or brass cover to protect the flame.
• Keep it away from children and follow fire safety measures.
