Ranchi, November 2, 2026: The Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication at Usha Martin University, Ranchi, organised a distinguished lecture on Media and Governance: A Sociological Understanding at the university’s Baitarni Auditorium on Monday. Akhil Kumar Mishra, Additional Director General (ADG), Press Information Bureau (PIB), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, delivered the lecture.
The session examined the relationship between media, governance and society, highlighting the role of communication in strengthening democracy, connecting the government with citizens and shaping public understanding. Discussions also focused on the importance of responsible media practices and effective public communication.
Media, Visual Communication and Audience Psychology
During the lecture, participants discussed communication strategies and messaging in visual media, with examples relating to videos and cinema. The session also examined the sociological dimensions of audience psychology and how media content can influence public perception and understanding.
The discussion offered students an opportunity to consider the relationship between media practices, society and governance.
PIB Official Highlights Career Opportunities for Students
Later in the programme, Gaurav Kumar Pushkar, Head of Office, PIB Ranchi, briefed students on the functioning of the Press Information Bureau and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.
He also highlighted career opportunities in the government sector for students pursuing Journalism and Mass Communication. The briefing introduced students to potential professional avenues in public communication and media-related fields.

The programme was attended by Brig. Sumar Vir Singh, Vice Chancellor of Usha Martin University; Dr. Shiv Pratap Verma, Registrar; Dr. Shahnaaz Zabi; Dr. Rupa Kumari; Dr. Amit Kumar; and Mr. Ramesh Munda.
A large number of students from the university’s Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication and Faculty of Law also participated in the session.
The lecture highlighted the importance of responsible communication, informed public engagement and the relationship between media and democratic governance.
