In his blog, Amitabh Bachchan recalled an incident from years ago when he was invited to a film festival in a foreign country. During the flight, he noticed a local newspaper carrying a poster of one of his films. Unable to read the language, he asked a flight attendant about it and was told that the paper reported the arrival of an Indian film star.
After landing, he realized the scale of attention he was receiving when a massive crowd gathered at the airport to welcome him. The situation became so intense that police escort and special security arrangements were required, and for the first time in his life, Bachchan had to complete immigration formalities at the hotel instead of the airport.
Despite the overwhelming public admiration, the joy was short-lived. Amitabh Bachchan wrote that a senior journalist from the host country made a comment that deeply disturbed him. The journalist reportedly wrote, “Why is this third-rate actor from a third-world country getting so much attention?”
The actor admitted that while being personally called a “third-rate actor” did not bother him as much, India being referred to as a third-world country caused him deep pain.
Clarifying his intention, Bachchan emphasized that his tweet was never meant to offend anyone. Through his words, he wanted to underline that India has today established itself globally — in sports, cinema, culture, science, and many other fields — and deserves respect on the world stage.
