Anand Mahindra and S. Somnath appointed to RBI central board

The Central Government has appointed S. Somnath Sridhara Panikkar as a part-time non-official director in the Central Board of the RBI.

Anand Mahindra and S. Somnath appointed to RBI central board: Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra has once again been appointed to the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Additionally, former head of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) S. Somnath has been appointed to this board for the first time. Both these new appointments of RBI have become effective from 20 August 2026.

The Central Government has appointed S. Somnath Sridhara Panikkar as a part-time non-official director in the Central Board of the RBI. Meanwhile, RBI reappoints Anand Mahindra as a part-time non-official director for another 4 year term, according to a separate statement. Following  two appointments, the Central Board of RBI has become a total of 11 members.

The central board consists of RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra and Deputy Governors Swaminathan Jay, Poonam Gupta, Shirish Chandra Murmu and Rohit Jain. Non-official directors of this board include Anand Mahindra, S Somnath, Revathi Iyer, Professor Sachin Chaturvedi, Anuradha Thakur and former secretary Sanjay Lohia.

This new appointment will ensure continuity in the industry sector. Aerospace engineering and technology expert S. Somnath will be able to lend his experience to RBI’s Digital Banking, Cyber ​​Security and Financial Technology (FinTech) department.
