BJP Returns to Power in Assam; Himanta Biswa Sarma Resigns as CM: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again secured a decisive victory in the Assam Assembly elections, winning 82 seats and paving the way for government formation. As political activity intensifies, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma resigned from his post on Wednesday and submitted his resignation to Governor Laxman Prasad Acharya. The Governor has asked him to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until the new government is formed.
After resigning, Sarma stated that the Election Commission of India had officially declared the election results and forwarded the notification to the Governor. He confirmed that he had requested the dissolution of the Assam Legislative Assembly, which was accepted. The Governor has directed the current administration to function as a caretaker government until a new leadership is in place, with Sarma expressing confidence that the transition will happen soon.
Sarma also indicated that the swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place after May 11, with Narendra Modi expected to attend. He added that JP Nadda and Nayab Singh Saini have been appointed as central observers, and the legislative party will soon decide the next Chief Minister. In the final tally, BJP won 82 seats, while the Indian National Congress secured 19, Bodoland People’s Front and Asom Gana Parishad got 10 seats each, and All India United Democratic Front managed just 2 seats.
