Cabinet Clears ₹5,659 Crore Cotton Mission to Boost Output by 2031

Union Cabinet Announces Major Push for Railways, Chip Sector and Cotton Mission: The Union Cabinet has approved a series of major decisions aimed at strengthening India’s agriculture, infrastructure, and industrial sectors. A key highlight is the launch of the Kapas Kanti Mission, with an outlay of ₹5,659 crore to boost cotton production between 2026-27 and 2030-31. With India being the world’s second-largest cotton producer, the initiative seeks to enhance productivity through advanced research, new technologies, and improved fiber quality to meet the projected domestic demand of 45 million bales. The move is expected to benefit around 3.2 million cotton farmers across the country.

In another significant decision, the government has fixed the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) for sugarcane for the 2026-27 season, with an estimated financial impact of nearly ₹1 lakh crore. This step is expected to provide substantial support to sugarcane farmers. Additionally, the Cabinet has extended the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) 5, allocating ₹18,100 crore to ensure easier and more affordable credit for micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), thereby strengthening the backbone of the economy.

The Cabinet also approved several infrastructure and industrial projects to accelerate economic growth. These include a ₹1,570 crore ship repair hub in Gujarat to boost maritime trade and employment, along with major railway upgrades worth thousands of crores to reduce congestion and improve train speeds. Furthermore, two new semiconductor manufacturing units have been cleared to enhance India’s technological capabilities and self-reliance. The government has also emphasized strengthening the judicial system, signaling a comprehensive approach to national development across sectors.
