Flash flood in Nepal: 8 died, several missing, rescue operation underway: At least 8 people died after a massive flash flood from Tibet caused widespread devastation in Nepal’s Rasuwa district on Wednesday. A large number of vehicles and other goods have been swept away. Following the incident, the district administration issued a high alert warning for several low lying areas. Search operation is underway to find out several missing persons.
As per officials, the flood hit the main market area of the district around 9 am(local time) on Wednesday. A flash flood in the Bhote Koshi river swept through Nepal’s northern Rasuwa district bordering China causing widespread damage. The authorities have advised people living along riverbanks in Rusawa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha and Chitwan districts to remain alert and move to safer locations. Bhotekoshi River also recorded a significant rise in water levels. Meanwhile the flooding and landslides have also affected the area around Gyirong Port on the Chinese side of Nepal-China border in Tibet.
According to Rasuwa’s Assistant Chief District Officer, Dhruv Prasad Adhikari two nearby markets including Timure, vehicles in large numbers and other goods, recently constructed new bridge was swept away by strong currents. Reports also said that the flood waters also damaged three Nepal Police Offices, several hydroelectric projects and settlements.
Nepal army spokesman Brigadier General Rajaram Basnet said two Nepal army helicopters dispatched to Rusawa flood affected areas to assist in relief and rescue operations.
