Char Dham Gates to Open 11 Days Earlier This Year
Good News Regarding the Char Dham Yatra: There’s good news for devotees regarding Uttarakhand’s world-famous Char Dham Yatra this year. The Char Dham Yatra in 2026 is set to begin 11 days earlier than last year. The pilgrimage will commence on April 19th, the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, with the opening of the gates of Gangotri and Yamunotri Dhams. Last year (2025), the Char Dham Yatra began on April 30th, but this year, due to auspicious dates, it will start on April 19th.
The extended duration of the pilgrimage will not only give devotees from India and around the world more time for darshan (viewing the deities), but it has also brought smiles to the faces of local hotel owners, taxi operators, and traders. It is believed that this extra time will significantly boost the tourism business.
The day of Akshaya Tritiya is considered particularly auspicious for the commencement of the Char Dham Yatra. According to the Hindu calendar, the third day of the bright half of the month of Vaishakha is called Akshaya Tritiya. ‘Akshaya’ means that which is imperishable. According to the scriptures, charity, chanting, and virtuous deeds performed on this day yield infinite rewards. This day is also considered the beginning of the Satya Yuga and Treta Yuga. This day is considered the most auspicious for the opening of the gates of Badrinath Dham and the gates of Gangotri and Yamunotri, as it symbolizes new beginnings and prosperity.
Lessons Learned from Last Year’s Challenges
The 2025 pilgrimage was affected by several adverse circumstances. Border tensions and subsequent natural disasters in Dharali and Tharali disrupted the journey for devotees. The administration had to halt the pilgrimage several times for security reasons. Taking these experiences into account, the administrative machinery is already on high alert this time.
Administrative Preparations Intensified
Garhwal Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey has completed the review of the initial preparations for the pilgrimage in Rishikesh. A plan is being prepared for road repairs, drinking water facilities, and passenger registration. A final review meeting will be held soon at the chief secretary level to ensure that passengers do not face any inconvenience.
