India approves power export to Nepal: India extends a helping hand to supply electricity to Nepal after major flood damage. The Government of India has approved the export of 654 MW of electricity to Nepal from September 13 to December 31, 2026. The approval aims to help Nepal meet its power requirements and strengthen bilateral energy cooperation.
Nepal experienced major power supply disruption due to devastating flash floods damaging hydropower infrastructure and solar plants on August 26. India has stepped forward to assist Nepal during this difficult time. The Government of India has approved the export of 654 MW of electricity to Nepal for up to 18 hours a day. This power supply will continue from September 13 through December 31, 2026.
Reports indicate that approximately 10 percent of Nepal’s electricity generation capacity has been affected as a result. As per India’s approval, 600 MW of electricity will be supplied via the Muzaffarpur-Dhalkebar 400 kV line and 54 MW via the Tanakpur-Mahendranagar 132 kV line. This supply will be available for 18 hours a day, specifically from midnight to 6 PM. This assistance will not only meet Nepal’s urgent electricity needs but also support relief and reconstruction efforts.
Following the natural disaster, this power cooperation between the two nations has emerged as a prime example of regional collaboration between neighbors.
