Fans also want to see the Indian team in the blue jersey. After all, what is the logic of orange (saffron) color?’
Indian Hockey Team’s ‘Orange’ Jersey Sparks Controversy: The Indian hockey team’s new jersey has drawn criticism and sparked controversy. Ahead of the upcoming Men’s and Women’s Hockey World Cup, Hockey India has launched an orange jersey instead of the team’s traditional blue jersey. Former Indian hockey captain Viren Wilfred Rasquinha has expressed his displeasure at this decision.
India’s men’s and women’s hockey teams have been playing in blue jerseys for decades. This color has become the identity of Indian hockey. After the unveiling of the new orange jersey, former captain Viren Rasquinha on social media wrote,‘ Hockey India has done many good things, but this decision is disappointing. The heritage and identity of the Indian team has always been the blue jersey. I have worn the blue jersey with pride for many years. Fans also want to see the Indian team in the blue jersey. After all, what is the logic of orange (saffron) color?’ Viren further said, ‘My direct and humble question is only about the identity, pride and legacy of Indian hockey.’
After the controversy, Hockey India president Dilip Tirkey clarified the reason for this decision. He said that this change was not a decision of any one person but was made on the suggestions of players, captains, coaches and support staff.
