Jaiswal and Fernando fined for on-field clash: Indian team opener Yashaswi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan seamer Asitha Fernando were fined for breaching the ICC code of conduct. Both players were fined 25 per cent of their match fee.
According to sources, the duo was caught up in a heated exchange at the Sinhalese Sports Club ground on Sunday. The duo was involved in a confrontation after Fernando dismissed Jaiswal in the 17th over of India’s first innings. Jaiswal walked towards Fernando, and the two exchanged words. Both stood close and face to face. Before the two made head-to-head contact, other players pulled them away. Even though the two teams minimized the incident, the ICC stepped in and imposed the punishment. This was the first disciplinary action against both players past 24 months.
On-field umpires Ahsan Raza and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid, third umpire Rod Tucker, and fourth umpire Prageeth Rambukwella levelled the charge. Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points. Both players were found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel. The provision covers ‘Inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person’.
Jaiswal and Fernando admitted the offence and accepted the sanctions proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees. With both players accepting the charges, no formal hearing was required.
