The process of name change was started from March 2018. This place is considered to be the birthplace of Lord Parashuram. There is also an ancient temple of Lord Parashuram here. The Shahjahanpur Municipal Council passed the proposal in March 2018 and September 2023 board meetings. The then DM of Shahjahanpur sent the proposal to the state government with his approval. The state government forwarded it to the central government. The central government had approved the state government’s proposal on August 20, 2025, which has been given the green light in the cabinet meeting today.

The decision comes after repeated demands from residents and public representatives, who had been requesting that the town be renamed in honour of Lord Parshuram. The proposal was forwarded after considering public sentiment and regional cultural identity.

There are many arguments behind naming this tehsil of Shahjahanpur as Jalalabad. The town was named Jalalabad in honor of Mughal Emperor Jalaluddin Akbar.
