2-Year-Old Karnataka Girl Sets Record Playing 12 Taals on Tabla

Children around the age of two are usually busy exploring toys, learning new words and taking their first steps towards independence. But Swarshri Hegde has already discovered a remarkable talent that sets her apart. The toddler from Karnataka has earned a place in the India Book of Records for reciting and playing 12 taals on the tabla at just 2 years and 10 months old.

A video of her performance, shared on X, has caught the attention of social media users. Her ability to recite rhythmic patterns and reproduce them on the instrument has left viewers impressed.

Karnataka Toddler Shows an Early Flair for Music

Swarshri hails from Honnavara in Uttara Kannada district. Her achievement highlights an unusual level of rhythmic awareness at an age when most children are still developing their speech and coordination.

The tabla is a key percussion instrument in Indian classical music. Learning to play it involves understanding rhythm, maintaining timing and coordinating hand movements. Swarshri’s feat goes a step further, as she can both recite and play 12 different taals.

A taal is a rhythmic cycle built around a fixed sequence of beats. Each cycle follows a particular structure and returns to its starting point, called the sam. Musicians also learn bols, the spoken syllables associated with individual tabla strokes. Remembering these patterns and performing them accurately requires practice, concentration and a strong sense of rhythm.

Her record has also brought attention to Honnavara and the coastal region of Uttara Kannada. Many viewers have extended their best wishes to the little performer as she continues her musical journey.
