LPG Shortage Hits Restaurants in Maharashtra and Karnataka
Middle East Tensions Trigger Cooking Gas Crisis in India: A sudden shortage of commercial cooking gas has created concern across the hospitality sector in parts of India. Restaurant associations in Maharashtra and Karnataka have warned that many restaurants may be forced to shut down if LPG supplies are not restored soon.
The problem is already affecting businesses in cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru. Several restaurants and hotels in Bengaluru reportedly remained closed as owners struggled to arrange cooking gas.
According to reports, the shortage began after global supply disruptions linked to rising tensions in the Middle East following attacks involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
The crisis has also affected civic services. The Pune Municipal Corporation has temporarily shut down the city’s gas-based crematorium because of restrictions on LPG fuels like propane and butane.
Restaurant owners say commercial LPG supply has nearly stopped since Sunday. At the same time, domestic cylinder deliveries are also being delayed by two to eight days.
To control the situation and prevent hoarding, oil companies have tightened refill rules. Customers can now order a new domestic LPG cylinder only 21–25 days after the previous delivery, and delivery agents are using OTP or biometric verification to monitor distribution.
If the supply issue continues, the hospitality industry fears that more restaurants and hotels could face temporary closure in the coming days.
