Education Body NCERT Removes Book After Judiciary Chapter Controversy
NCERT Apologizes After Controversy Over Class 8 Judiciary Chapter: The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has issued an unconditional apology after controversy erupted over a chapter related to the judiciary in a Class 8 social science textbook. The council has also decided to withdraw the book from the market and digital platforms.
The textbook, titled “Exploring Society: India and Beyond,” included a chapter called “Role of Judiciary in Our Society.” The chapter discussed issues such as judicial corruption, a large backlog of cases, and a shortage of judges in the system. These references drew strong objections from the Supreme Court of India.
After the controversy, NCERT announced on X (formerly Twitter) that the chapter would be removed and the textbook would be rewritten. The council also asked anyone who has a copy of the book to return it to NCERT headquarters.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education (India) has instructed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to ensure that any digital content related to the controversial chapter is removed from online platforms.
NCERT has said that the book will be revised in consultation with relevant authorities before it is released again. The issue has also started a broader discussion about how sensitive topics related to national institutions should be presented in school textbooks.
