India Says It Will Continue Buying Russian Oil, Calls Energy Security a National Priority
“No Permission Needed”: India Hits Back at US Over Russian Oil: As tensions escalate in West Asia due to the ongoing conflict involving Israel, Iran, and the United States, the government of India has made it clear that the country will continue purchasing crude oil based on its national interests.
Responding to criticism from opposition parties, the central government stated that India does not require permission from any country to decide where it buys its energy resources.The government reaffirmed that imports from Russia will continue, even after a temporary 30-day exemption granted by the United States regarding the sale of Russian oil shipments to India.
Government Hits Back at Opposition Over Russian Oil Imports
Officials emphasized that Russia will remain India’s largest crude oil supplier in February 2026. According to the government, India has maintained its oil trade with Russia throughout the Russo‑Ukrainian War, despite objections from Western countries. After 2022, imports from Russia increased significantly as Indian refiners took advantage of discounted crude oil prices and rising domestic demand.
The government also pointed to the growing tensions around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil shipping lanes. The conflict in the Middle East has disrupted global energy flows and raised fears about possible supply disruptions. Despite these concerns, officials said India’s energy supply remains stable and secure.
