No queue, no paperwork, know how to book luggage online: Indian Railways has introduced online luggage booking facility to reduce rush and hassle of passengers at stations. This service is available only to passengers with confirmed tickets. The move is aimed at eliminating paperwork and saving time for passengers. This will relieve unnecessary congestion at major railway stations across the country.
Now, passengers will not have to stand in long queues for declaring and booking extra luggage. Railways has started this online service from 31st July. All zonal railways have already been directed to implement this service through letters. Passengers whose tickets will be confirmed can take advantage of this online facility. Let’s know how you can benefit from this service.
1. First of all visit the official website of Railways www.parcel.indianrail.gov.in for luggage.
2. Here you have to enter the train number, start of the journey, destination station, and information related to the parcel.
3. After this process the portal will automatically tell you the estimated fare.
4. Passengers can do final verification of baggage weight at the station by taking a printout of the online application.
5. The goods can be picked up at the destination from the receipt received after payment. Also, the live location of the goods can be known through track and trace service and SMS.
Railways have fixed free and maximum baggage limit for each class of passengers. In second class (general) baggage can be carried up to 35 kg free and up to 70 kg with extra charge. Free limit in sleeper is 40 kg and maximum is 80 kg. Free for AC 3-tier and AC chair cars and maximum limit is 40 kg, no extra luggage is allowed here. First AC has 70 kg free and a maximum limit of 150 kg. 50 kg free and maximum 100 kg luggage can be carried in second AC.
