Bengal Poll Battle Intensifies Ahead of May 4 Results
Phase 2 Voting in West Bengal Tomorrow: 142 Seats Up for Grabs: The second and final phase of the assembly elections in West Bengal will take place on Wednesday, covering 142 constituencies across eight key districts, including Kolkata, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Howrah, and West Medinipur. A total of 1,448 candidates are contesting in this phase, making it a high-stakes electoral battle. The first phase, held on April 23, saw voting in 152 seats, with results for the entire election scheduled to be announced on May 4.
Following an impressive 93% voter turnout in the first phase, expectations are high for another strong participation in this round. Key constituencies such as Bhabanipur, associated with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, and Nandigram, linked to Suvendu Adhikari, are under intense scrutiny. These seats are seen as crucial in determining the political direction of the state.
The Election Commission of India has implemented extensive security measures to ensure peaceful polling. Central paramilitary forces have been deployed in large numbers, with CCTV surveillance and webcasting arrangements in sensitive areas. Border regions have also been sealed to prevent any untoward incidents. Meanwhile, the campaign narrative has shifted in this phase—from slogans like “Sonar Bangla” to more culturally and religiously charged messaging, reflecting the evolving dynamics of the electoral contest.
