PM Modi to flag off India’s first hydrogen train: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to flag off the country’s first hydrogen fuel train in Haryana on July 17 at Jind railway station. This is a great initiative by the Indian Railways in the direction of clean and green transportation.
This train has undergone trials between Sonepat, Jind and New Delhi under different conditions for the last two and a half months. This hydrogen-powered train is considered to be more environmentally friendly than conventional diesel engines as it produces no carbon emissions and only emits water vapor. According to the Railways, this train is based on hydrogen fuel cell technology, which converts hydrogen into electricity to power the motors. Let’s understand about this train in detail.
The hydrogen train will initially run between Jind and Sonepat in Haryana. It will complete two round trips daily and cover a distance of 356 km. The train has a total of 10 coaches, including two driving power cars and eight passenger coaches. It has 682 seats, while the total capacity is 2,600 passengers. For this, the Railways has also prepared a hydrogen storage and refueling station in Jind, so that the fuel can be provided to the train at the local level.
This train consists of two driving power cars and eight passenger coaches. Each driving power car is capable of producing 1,200 kilowatts of electricity, which is equivalent to about 1,600 horsepower. About 440 kg of compressed hydrogen can be stored in the train. The maximum design speed has been kept at 110 kmph, although on the Jind-Sonepat section, it will be run at a speed of 75 kmph. At maximum load, it will consume about 300 kg of hydrogen per day.
In the initial phase, it will be operated only on fixed routes, and for maintenance, it will be taken to Delhi’s Shakurbasti workshop with the help of a diesel engine, railway sources said. All manuals related to its operation and maintenance have been approved by the Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO).
