West Bengal Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari had directed the police to register a fresh case and re-investigate the circumstances surrounding the victim’s cremation.

According to the police, Panihati Ex- MLA Nirmal Ghosh has been arrested following a fresh FIR over the alleged rushed cremation and destruction of evidence in the RG rape-murder case registered on Monday. West Bengal Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari had directed the police to register a fresh case and re-investigate the circumstances surrounding the victim’s cremation. The Chief Minister had said that there were many questions regarding the waiver of funeral fees and the non-signature of family members on the documents. He had said that the role of Nirmal Ghosh, Councilor Somnath Dey, and the family’s neighbor Sanjeev Mukherjee should be investigated. The Chief Minister had instructed the Barrackpore Police Commissioner to take action on this. Police officials said the case is separate from the original rape and murder probe, which is being investigated by the CBI.
On the night of August 9, 2024, a trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Hospital. There was an outcry in the whole country. There were allegations that evidence was destroyed and efforts were made to suppress the case following the incident.
