Nirmala Sitharaman to Present Historic Ninth Union Budget Amid Global Economic Uncertainty
Union Budget 2026 Today: Finance Minister Sitharaman to Present General Budget: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the Union Budget for 2026–27 today, marking a historic first as the budget is being tabled on a Sunday. This will be Sitharaman’s ninth consecutive budget, making her the longest-serving woman Finance Minister in India’s history.
The FY27 budget will also be the 15th budget presented by the Narendra Modi-led government and the second full budget since the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a third consecutive term in the 2024 general elections.
The budget comes at a crucial juncture for the Indian economy. While domestic demand remains resilient and inflation has eased from recent highs, the global economic environment continues to be fraught with uncertainty. Rising geopolitical tensions, volatile commodity prices, uneven monetary policy easing by major central banks, and increasing global trade fragmentation are posing significant risks to growth prospects.
Adding to the challenges, the imposition of a punitive 50 percent tariff on Indian goods by US President Donald Trump has unsettled financial markets and raised concerns over export competitiveness and external demand.
Economists expect the government to focus on key growth-driving sectors such as defence, infrastructure, capital expenditure, power, and affordable housing. At the same time, the budget is likely to strike a careful balance between sustaining economic momentum and maintaining fiscal discipline.
According to experts, social welfare priorities will continue to be addressed, but without compromising the government’s commitment to fiscal consolidation. India has made steady progress on this front, with the fiscal deficit reduced from a pandemic-era peak of 9.2 percent to an estimated 4.4 percent in FY26. Economists believe this path of fiscal prudence will largely be preserved in the FY27 budget as well.
Overall, analysts expect the Union Budget 2026–27 to navigate a complex global and domestic landscape, aiming to support growth, reinforce fiscal credibility, and cushion the economy against near-term geopolitical and economic shocks.
