UPI has now completed its 10 years and during this time it has completely transformed India’s digital payment system.

Launched on 25 August 2016, UPI has now completed its 10 years and during this time it has completely transformed India’s digital payment system. Sharing a special post on X Modi said a decade ago, UPI was rolled out, marking a major turning point in India’s digital payment’s journey.
The interface was launched on August 25, 2016, by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) under the regulatory oversight of the Reserve Bank of India. In 2016-17 financial year there were only 1.78 crore annual transactions. By the 2025-26 financial year, this figure had surged to over 24,162 crore transactions. In other words, annual UPI transactions have increased nearly 13,000-fold around a decade. It is not just the volume of transactions that has grown.
In May 2026, for the first time, over 2,300 crore transactions were recorded in a single month. With 2,320 crore transactions in May and 2,366 crore in July 2026, the platform achieved its highest-ever monthly transaction figures in its decade-long journey.
UPI is no longer confined to India. It is now operational in 11 countries, including the UAE, France, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Singapore, Mauritius, Qatar, Cambodia, Greece, and the Maldives. According to the IMF, UPI accounted for approximately 49 percent of the global real-time payment transaction volume in 2025.
