Vat Purnima 2026: Know why Vat tree is worshipped?: Vat Purnima vrat is observed on Jyestha Purnima. It symbolizes commitment, protection, and blessings for marital harmony. Vat Purnima vrat is similar to Vat Savitri vrat. In North India, this fast is performed on the Amavasya tithi of the Jyeshtha month. In South India, it is performed on the Jyeshtha Purnima tithi.
This year Vat Savitri Purnima vrat will be observed on 29 June(Monday). Traditionally, this vrat is performed for 3 days starting from Trayodashi tithi till purnima. On this day, married women observe this fast for the long life of their husbands and the prosperity of their family. According to local tradition, even unmarried girls can perform this fast for a suitable and desired spouse. Vrat will start from June 27, Saturday. The rules of fast will be observed for 2 days, and the main pooja will be performed on the last day, i.e., on 29th June(purnima).
The festival commemorates the devotion of Savitri, who saved her husband Satyavan from Yama, the lord of death. In this vrat banyan tree is worshipped because of its special importance. This fast is observed more in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa and other Southern states of India.
Why is Vat(banyan) tree worshiped during Vat Savitri vrat?
In Hinduism Banyan tree is considered very auspicious. Many gods and goddesses are believed to reside in this tree. Hence it is worshiped on special occasions. Vat tree is mainly worshiped on Vat Savitri Vrat. According to hindu mythology lord Yamaraj revived Savitri’s husband Satyavan under the banyan tree. It is believed that by worshiping the banyan tree, one gets eternal good fortune and gets rid of obstacles in life.

According to the Hindu Panchang, the full moon date of Shukla Paksha of Jyeshtha month will start on June 29 at 03:06 am and end on the next day on June 30 at 05:26 am. Jyeshtha Purnima will be celebrated on June 29 based on Udaya Tithi. Brahra Muhurat for worship and bathing on Jyeshtha Vat Purnima will last from 4:06 AM to 4:46 AM. Apart from this, from 6 am to 8:30 am is the best time for worship. If you are not able to worship in this Muhurta then Abhijit Muhurta is also considered auspicious on June 29 from 11:57 AM to 12:52 PM.
