Vinesh Phogat barred from selection trials of World Wrestling Championship: The Delhi High Court has refused to grant interim relief to Vinesh Phogat in the selection trial of the World Wrestling Championship. On Thursday night, Justice Swarna Kanta Sharma dismissed Vinesh’s petition seeking interim relief.
Vinesh Phogat will not be able to give trials in the selection of Senior World Wrestling Championship to be held in Delhi on September 14. In its order, the court clarified that the criteria laid down in the circular dated September 7, 2026 will be equally applicable to all. If a player does not participate in the specified event then he does not fall under the eligibility categories specified by the Wrestling Federation of India.
On September 7, the circular for the trials of the 2026 Senior World Wrestling Championship was released. According to the rules, the players who won medals in the specified tournaments, the players who participated in the national coaching camp and the players selected for the U20 World Championship 2026 are eligible. Vinesh had knocked on the door of the court and demanded to get a chance to appear in the trial. She argued that her absence from some events was due to pregnancy, childbirth and post-natal recovery. Vinesh also said that she was barred from participating in the Senior Open Ranking Tournament in Gonda after the WFI issued a ‘show cause notice’ disqualifying him.
‘It is very important for the country to ensure that the selection of its representatives is done through a fair, uniform and performance-based process,’ the Delhi High Court said in its statement.
