Big Relief for Rajpal Yadav: Court Allows Bail Till March 18
Rajpal Yadav Gets Interim Bail After Depositing ₹1.5 Crore: Actor Rajpal Yadav has been granted interim bail by the Delhi High Court in a cheque-bounce case linked to his 2012 film Aata Pata Lapata, providing major relief to the actor. He had been lodged in Tihar Jail and surrendered there on February 5.
The High Court granted him interim bail until March 18, allowing him to attend his niece’s wedding in Shahjahanpur. However, the court directed him to surrender his passport. The next hearing in the matter is scheduled for March 18.
₹1.5 Crore Demand Draft Deposited
During the hearing on February 16, the High Court had given Rajpal Yadav’s counsel time until 3 pm to deposit a demand draft (DD) of ₹1.5 crore for interim relief. The court made it clear that failure to deposit the amount would result in the matter being heard the next day.
After his lawyer informed the bench that the DD had been deposited, the court granted interim bail.
Earlier, on February 12, the court had reprimanded the actor for not surrendering despite prior directions, stating that while the court may sympathize, the law must prevail.
Financial Support from Industry
Before surrendering, Rajpal had expressed helplessness over his financial situation. Following this, several members of the film industry reportedly extended financial assistance, including Salman Khan, Sonu Sood, Ajay Devgn, Varun Dhawan and filmmaker David Dhawan. Singer Mika Singh also shared a video stating he contributed ₹11 lakh to support the actor.
In an interview with Press Trust of India (PTI), Rajpal’s wife Radha Yadav thanked the industry for standing by him during the crisis.
What Is the Case About?
The case dates back to 2010 when Rajpal Yadav allegedly borrowed ₹5 crore from Delhi-based Murli Projects Private Limited to finance Aata Pata Lapata. After the film failed at the box office, repayment issues arose.
In 2018, a magisterial court convicted Rajpal and his wife under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act after seven cheques issued to the complainant bounced. He was sentenced to six months’ simple imprisonment, and a sessions court upheld the order in 2019.
In June 2024, the High Court suspended his sentence and directed him to take genuine steps to clear dues, which, including penalties and interest, have reportedly risen to around ₹9 crore. However, earlier this month, the court directed him to surrender, citing failure to comply with repayment assurances.
For now, Rajpal Yadav has secured temporary relief. The March 18 hearing will determine whether this reprieve continues or if further legal hurdles await the actor.
