Modi–Macron Meeting to Boost India–France Strategic Partnership
France President Emmanuel Macron on Three-Day India Visit: A significant day unfolds for the strategic partnership between India and France as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Emmanuel Macron hold high-level talks aimed at deepening cooperation in defense, trade, technology, and artificial intelligence.
President Macron arrived in Mumbai on a three-day official visit, accompanied by French First Lady Brigitte Macron. He was welcomed at the airport by Maharashtra Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This marks Macron’s fourth visit to India and his first to Mumbai, underlining the growing depth of bilateral ties.
High-Level Bilateral Talks
The Modi–Macron bilateral meeting is scheduled at Lok Bhavan in Mumbai at around 3:15 pm. The leaders will review progress under the long-standing India–France strategic partnership and explore expansion into emerging sectors.
In the evening, the two leaders will jointly inaugurate the India–France Year of Innovation 2026, an initiative to be celebrated in both countries through 2026. They will also address business leaders, start-ups, researchers, and innovators. A cultural commemorative event at the Gateway of India will symbolize the blend of technological and cultural collaboration.
Major Boost to Defense Ties
Defense remains a cornerstone of the partnership. India recently approved a proposal to procure 114 Dassault Rafale fighter jets from France, further strengthening air power cooperation. Discussions are also expected on joint production of helicopters and HAMMER precision-guided missiles.
On February 17, the sixth annual defense dialogue will be co-chaired by the defense ministers of both nations to enhance industrial collaboration. The two leaders will also virtually inaugurate the Tata-Airbus H125 helicopter assembly line in Vemgal, Karnataka—marking another milestone in joint manufacturing efforts.
Focus on AI and Emerging Technologies
Artificial intelligence will be a major highlight of Macron’s visit. He is scheduled to participate in the India AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi on February 19. Both nations had earlier agreed on a joint AI roadmap emphasizing safe, reliable, and human-centric AI development.
Looking Ahead: Horizon 2047
The meeting is seen as pivotal in advancing cooperation under the “Horizon 2047 Roadmap,” which charts bilateral engagement for the next 25 years. Alongside bilateral matters, the two leaders will also discuss pressing global and regional issues, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the Gaza situation, and developments in the Indo-Pacific region—where France is considered a key strategic partner for India amid evolving geopolitical challenges.
The Modi–Macron engagement signals not just continuity, but a renewed push toward innovation-led growth and strategic alignment in a rapidly changing global order.
