US-Canada Tensions Rise as Trump Threatens Trade War With Ottawa
US President Donald Trump has issued a sharp warning to Canada, threatening to impose 100% tariffs on all Canadian imports if Ottawa proceeds with a trade agreement with China. The warning follows a recent visit by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney to China, after which both countries signaled preparations for closer trade cooperation.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on Saturday, Trump accused Canada of potentially allowing China to use its territory as a conduit to bypass US trade restrictions. Trump referred to Carney as “Governor,” a term he has repeatedly used while publicly advocating for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States.
“If Governor Carney thinks he can make Canada a ‘drop-off port’ for China to ship goods and products to the US, he is making a grave mistake,” Trump wrote. “China will eat Canada alive, destroying it completely, including its businesses, social fabric, and way of life.”
Trade Tensions Escalate After Trump Targets Canada Over China Outreach
Trump added that any trade deal between Canada and China would trigger immediate punitive action. “If Canada makes a deal with China, a 100% tariff will be immediately imposed on all Canadian goods and products coming into the US,” he said.
The remarks come amid rising tensions between Washington and Ottawa. During his recent visit to China, Carney described Beijing as a “trusted and predictable partner” and later encouraged European leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos to pursue greater investment ties with the Asian economic powerhouse.
Trump has warned that China could exploit Canada’s trade relationships to evade US tariffs, a concern he reiterated in his latest comments. The US president has increasingly framed economic integration and trade policy as matters of national security.
Relations between the two countries have further deteriorated in recent days. On Thursday, Trump withdrew an invitation for Canada to participate in his Board of Peace initiative, which aims to resolve global conflicts. The move followed Carney’s speech in Davos, where he criticized powerful nations for using tariffs and economic integration as tools of political pressure.
The escalating rhetoric underscores growing strain in US-Canada relations, particularly as global trade dynamics and competition with China continue to shape foreign policy debates.
